Exploring Creativity Outside of Writing

When I was younger, I never felt like I was creative. I wanted to be because I come from a family of artists. My brother, now an architect, is a phenomenal artist. I can finally admit to it: I was jealous of my brother! I can’t draw stick people and this kid was six in an art class filled with adults. Seriously though, he is super talented.

Your thoughts become your reality because over the years I said aloud, “I wish I was creative” and “I’m so not creative.” I started to believe that but the thing is, just because I can’t draw that doesn’t mean that I’m not creative.  I AM CREATIVE and it only took me 40 years to realize it! I currently love crafting with old books: pages, covers, all things books! Did you know crafting is good for you? Here are 3 reasons why:

1. Self-care: We all need something that is just for us!

As a Mom, most of my time is spent caring for a little one. There is nothing wrong with that BUT not taking time for ourselves can make us resentful and burnt out. Taking time to craft allows time to rejuvenate and makes us kinder. Who doesn’t want to be a more patient caregiver? One can argue crafting is good for your family life.

2. Pure Enjoyment: It’s a lot of fun!

Ok, don’t get me wrong, I spent years thinking crafting was my worst nightmare but that was before I gave it a try.  It is fun! Just allowing myself to create gives me so much newfound joy. I’m willing to bet a quick Pinterest search can give you so many ideas.

3. Creative Thinking: It’s time to think creatively!

As a writer, crafting is a great time to think. It’s a stress release and a great time to come up with new ideas. I often keep a pad and pen close by while crafting so if I have any great ideas I can write them down immediately.

I will leave you with my latest project: a book page wall!

As a book lover, I am determined not to destroy books 📚 so I collected old and outdated books to repurpose into something fun! 💜 I even saved the extra pages and covers for future projects. The pages are not stuck to the walls, there is a layer of plywood in between so this can easily be taken down and moved!

Now GO CREATE!
